My Life After CP – BerkelBike Best Handcycles

October 23rd, 2009

For the mildly and moderately disabled, independent life with Cerebral Palsy (CP) is not out of the question. Actually, it is recommended for parents and caregivers to challenge people with CP to optimize their potential abilities and not settle for anything less than their best efforts. The more any child with disabilities can do independent; the better off those children will be as adults.

For example, living autonomous with CP can solve a lot of problems later in life. What happens when the parents become too elderly and sick to care for a daughter/son with CP? Does the responsibility then fall to the siblings or the state? Why not go for the possibility that a physically challenged child can grow up to have work, have his own home, or at least live in an assisted living accommodation where someone will come in and do the cleaning and make sure the individual with CP is doing okay on his own.

Kids with CP will reach their full potential both physically and mentally, if they have parents that focus on the abilities rather than the disability. Even the smallest successes can be monumental. But, sometimes it takes a lot of love and a strong heart to help a kid with cerebral palsy discover new abilities.

A case: A young boy born with cerebral palsy has loving parents who sadly disagree on the approach to his care. The father prefers to have somebody do things for him, to make life a little bit more convenient. On the other hand, the mother does not want him to become a 40 years old and still living at home, if there is any chance he has the potential to lead an autonomous life.

So, around the age of 7, the mother decides it is time she quits dressing her physically challenged son every day, just to make the procedure faster and easier. Instead, she knows this skill, that most individuals take for granted, is absolutely necessary to achieve any level of independence.

One Sunday morning, with nothing on the agenda, the young boy is given his clothes for the day and told he can go outside and play, after he gets dressed. Of course, a temper tantrum arises. Why has Mom forsaken him? Well, the wish to play outside on a sunny day is a great motivator. Although the first independent attempt at dressing takes 2-3 hours, he is able to go outside.

Love is often harsh. It was so hard for the mother to walk away, while hearing her son cry and struggle! But, she knew that if the job is achieved today, it would get easier tomorrow and the following days. The final goal keeps the mother from rushing in, wiping away her sons tears and frustration, and finishing the task in just a few minutes.

How the story ended? You are probably curious to know what happened. Did the boy with cerebral palsy live independently as an adult? Of course, the answer is yes. And no, because he will never change a ceiling light bulb. He has to ask for help from a friend occasionally. But, he learns to drive a car with hand controls, owns a home, is raising two children and working to make a living.

Is this a typical outcome? Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t. But, if you are the parent of a cerebral palsy child, focus on his/her abilities, not the disabilities. You are the number one fan, the cheerleader. You have the power to drive, console, and get the necessary help to support your kid with cerebral palsy to live autonomously, if possible. Isnt that what all parents do for their kids, whether they are disabled or not?
